About the
Readings - FAQ
Q. How long
is
a reading? How
much does it cost?
A. For an
individual: a 15 minute reading is $30, a half-hour reading is $45,
and a one hour reading is $65. A one-hour reading for a couple (or
two family members, such as a mother and daughter) is only $85. |

Q.
Do
you do private parties?
A. Yes!
However, because I tend to be soft-spoken with an introspective and thoughtful
style of
reading, I'm not really suitable as a high-energy gallery-style
"party psychic."
I also find
that I don't read as well in a loud, boisterous atmosphere where it's
difficult to concentrate or to hear my clients talk. But as long as
the party has a relatively quiet room
or space set
aside for the readings, that's fine.
A gathering of
friends or family (for example, a bridal shower, dinner party, or holiday
get-together)
is particularly ideal for readings. I am also willing to do corporate
or school
events. For a
flat fee, I charge $75 per hour with a minimum of two hours, or you can
have your
guests pay me individually for their readings if you prefer. Please
email me at readings @ matthewavelland.com for more information, or
to discuss scheduling a party.
Q. Where do you
do readings?
A. Many people
prefer to arrange for a reading in a private residence. I myself welcome
that setting,
due to its comfort and freedom from distractions, which works particularly
well for
longer readings. I'm happy to visit your residence for a reading, or
if you prefer,
you're welcome
to come to mine; I live near Rookwood Pavilion/Commons in Cincinnati Ohio.
Also, I am
willing to travel for readings in the general Tri-State area. If you
prefer a more
public
setting, such as a coffeehouse or restaurant with meeting space, I
welcome that as well. Contact me
to set up a time and place.
Q. What
Tarot deck do you use? What type of
card spread?
A. I read with
the Golden Tarot (pictured at top right), featuring medieval and Renaissance
art images; or
with the Thoth deck, designed in the 1930s with art by Lady Frieda Harris,
or with the
classic Rider Waite deck. The spread (or card arrangement) will be
chosen depending on the nature of your question, and the arrangement
I feel will yield the most insight; I use multiple types of spreads
for different purposes.
Q. Are you
psychic / telepathic?
A. My approach
to divination is to regard it as a means to gain insight into a
question or
situation,
rather than a way to "tell the future" per se. During a
reading, I employ the
Jungian
concept of synchronicity to identify and interpret symbols and
patterns in a meaningful way. However, while I don't identify as a
psychic or a clairvoyant, there have
certainly been
some uncanny readings in which I felt something more intuitive was at work.
Q. What are
runes? What is ogham?
A. The runes
are an ancient Germanic alphabet which can be used for divination. Ogham
(pronounced
"oh-um") is a somewhat similar system, employing the Celtic
tree alphabet.
Informational
pages about ogham and runes are under construction. Currently, I am
focusing on
tarot as my divination method for working with clients. However, I
can do
ogham readings
using the Celtic Tree Oracle cards by Colin Murray; and I am in the process
of making my
own set of wooden runes in the traditional way. I'll eventually be
reading with
those as well. |
